So how did you get into all of this?

It all started on a trip to Norway & Denmark in the Winter of 2009. While in Skagen, Denmark I came across this beautiful Woodworking shop where the craftsperson was selling their wares in the front while carving wooden objects in the back. The minimalist design of the shop captured my imagination and their beautifully crafted pieces planted a seed. I could envision myself living a humble and creative life like this. Almost a decade later the dream began to materialize as I began hunting down Scandinavian pieces around the PNW, and restoring them in my Garage in Portland, Oregon.

While sourcing around the PNW was great fun, I knew I wanted to be more closely connected with Scandinavia, where I could find more authentic pieces. The local supply seemed to be limited to later production Teak furniture which lacked the integrity and design from the 50s-60s. After a trip to Europe in Spring of 2018, I returned with a determination to figure out how to bring back the good stuff. That year, I devoted myself to studying importing until I pulled the trigger on my first big sourcing trip TO Denmark, Sweden & Norway. We barely broke even but it was one of the wildest experiences of my life. I was hooked! Fast forward three years and we’re now eight containers deep, So I guess this crazy idea is working?

As the name implies, at Form and Function we strive to offer pieces that are both functional and strikingly beautiful. Equally as important, is creating a buying experience that informs and excites customers about this rich period of furniture design: The Golden Age of Scandinavian Design.
